Soy Wax vs. Paraffin Candles: What’s the Difference?

If you have ever compared candle labels, you have probably seen wax described as soy, paraffin, coconut, blended or plant-based. The wax matters because it affects how a candle is formulated and how it performs, but no single wax automatically guarantees a “better” candle.

Soy Wax and Paraffin Wax: The Basics

Soy wax is made from processed soybean oil. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum refining. Both are widely used in candle making, and both can be formulated into candles with good fragrance performance and an even burn.

What Actually Affects Candle Performance?

Wax is only one part of the system. Wick size, fragrance load, vessel diameter, formulation, cure time and how the candle is burned all affect performance. A well-made candle should be tested as a complete formula rather than judged by wax type alone.

Burn behaviour

Different waxes melt and release fragrance differently. Some soy-based formulas have lower melting points, while paraffin can offer strong fragrance performance. Blends are common because makers can combine characteristics from more than one wax.

Soot

Any candle flame can produce visible soot if the wick is too long, the flame is disturbed by drafts or the candle is burned incorrectly. Wax choice alone does not make a candle soot-free. Trimming the wick and following the maker’s burn instructions matter.

Fragrance throw

The strength of a candle’s fragrance depends on the entire formula, including wax, fragrance oil, wick and vessel. A candle with a carefully tested blend can perform differently from another candle made with the same wax type.

What Should You Look For When Buying a Candle?

• Clear fragrance notes: choose a scent profile you actually enjoy.
• Burn instructions: a responsible maker should provide safe-use guidance.
• Tested burn performance: look for realistic burn-time information rather than exaggerated claims.
• Ingredient transparency: if a particular wax or formulation matters to you, ask the maker directly.
